General Motors has just announced that they are planning to transition to all electric vehicles by the year 2040. Their plan is to eliminate all gas powered vehicles and replace them wit electric versions of that vehicle. General Motors has been pushing electric vehicles hard for about the last few years. They started with the Chevrolet Volt and are now onto the Chevrolet Bolt EV. Every manufacturer is now beginning to come out with more and more electric vehicles. This report that GM is starting to transition came out today, January 28, 2021.
General Motors also announced that along with making an all electric vehicle lineup, they will also strive to be carbon neutral by 2040 as well. to be carbon neutral means that all of General Motors vehicles and production plants will be emitting zero emissions. GM says that is not everything is carbon neutral by then, they will buy what is called a “Carbon Credit” to offset the plants and vehicles that are not up to that standard yet. General Motors is joining other governments and companies that are trying to reduce the strain on the environment from things such as gas powered vehicles and large production plants that emit countless amounts of pollution into the air everyday. There is going to be a lot of pushback from customers we can almost guarantee. A lot of people like their big loud V8s, and that is understandable. But in order to help preserve the planet during our time on it, we must all do our parts to keep it as clean and as safe as possible.
General Motors has already said that this transition will not result in the loss of jobs. The workers will be trained and will be doing similar jobs to what they were doing when they were working on the gas powered vehicles. In this press release, it is clear that GM is dead set of eliminating pollutions from all new LIGHT DUTY vehicles by 2035. Notice how LIGHT DUTY was in all caps. This seems to mean that they are not fully sure what they are going to be doing with the heavy duty vehicles that they currently offer. General Motors will have to come up with a way for people to tow just as much if not more with an electric heavy duty vehicle. A lot of people rely of the Silverado 2500,3500, and so many other vehicles because they have the towing capacity to tow more than the light duty vehicles.
General Motors also announced that they are planning to unveil up to 30 new electric vehicles over the next 5 years. We believe they are just going to be making some of the vehicles that are currently running on gas and making them electric vehicles. We often get the question about why manufacturers do not make their current best selling models available as an electric vehicle. We do not have an answer for that but now it seems like that could be a possibility. One of our best selling vehicles is the Chevrolet Equinox. It would do great if it were an electric vehicle. It is already a good looking vehicle and if you adding electric to it, it would make it even better. Hopefully the brands that are owned by General Motors start to come out with some better looking electric vehicles. Tesla is currently leaps and bounds ahead of every other electric vehicle on the market. They have by far the best styling when it comes to electric vehicles. Most of the electric vehicles you see on the road are borderline ugly. They just are and thats why people do not buy them. Now when you go out, you are almost guaranteed to see some version of a Tesla. And now they have started making their models more and more affordable while keeping a very good looking vehicle. Chevrolet currently has the Bolt EV and the previous generation Volt.
Every month Chevrolet throws tons of incentives at the Bolt in the hopes that it will get it going. They are starting to show some traction but the goal should be to see it without having to almost give them away. We want the people to want them for what they are and not because they have the most amount of money off. Once General Motors starts to make some affordable good looking electric vehicles, they will sell like hotcakes. These next 20 years are going to be very interesting in the automotive world. No matter how you are associated with it, it is going to change whether you like it or not.
